This is a cliffhanger. Basically a bunch of chapters about a girl who works for a very rich man who is also a vampire. Big whoop. It's not a romance its a simple story about a girl working for a rich vampire. And that's it. I detest cliffhangers and when the author doesn't reveal its a cliffhanger I find that sleazy. Kindling Flames Gathering Tinder The Ancient Fire Series Julie Wetzel 9781634220132 Books Reviews
The story was a little hard to get into, perhaps because the author kept a relatively distant third person point of view reminiscent of Elizabeth Hunter, whom I love, so I stuck it out. And I was glad that I did up until the sorta, almost, but not quite ending. Vicky and Darien built a solid relationship that when the time comes could be a strong, believable romance.
Unfortunately this wasn't a story. The first half of a book perhaps. Act one and two - check. No act three. For me, there is no quicker way to alienate me as a reader than to deny me an ending which I feel promised when I buy a "book." I expect at least some sort of closure. This book had nothing of the sort. Just as we started building tension - snap! Right back at the reader. We get nothing. Just a buy the next book for $4+
My answer. No way.
I feel cheated. Taken advantage of. Treated like either an idiot or a sucker, neither of which are ways I like to be treated. I committed to reading your book, free though it may be. At least finish it.
Here's the problem. This was a relatively short book. There are apparently 5 in the series. Now even though Book 1 really grabbed me and I was enjoying it to no end, I'm smart enough to recognize a pattern early on. So if book one doesn't answer ANY questions, why would Book 2, or 3 and so on? Simple. They won't. It is a marketing scheme. An unfortunate one at that because this series just lost a potentially dedicated reader because Julie Wetzel decided to keep us hanging from a burning building.
Wrap the series into an affordable bundle and I'd love to finish these episodes. But I will not spend nearly $5 for a glorified novella, which will inevitably force me into another. Sorry.
Thanks for stringing me along though. It was fun while it lasted.
Vicky Westernly is hired as a temp to be the personal assistant for Darien Ritter, who it turns out is a master vampire (what a master vampire is isn’t explained in the book, unless I just missed it, but I’m guessing it just means he’s super old). She handles his human life, which is contained in a messenger bag that she must carry around with her everywhere. She eventually comes to discover that not only is he a vampire, but that there also exists werewolves and fairies (though she’s not privy to that info yet, just the reader is).
She takes the news surprisingly well. I mean that in the sense that she should have been a bit more surprised. But interestingly, that didn’t bother me. It is established in the book that in addition to being a master vampire, Darien is also something of a mystery to people within the vampire community, and as such hold him in high esteem. So when Vicky finds out and continues her banter with Darien as though teasing her much-liked boss instead of a 900 year old vampire, and the others in the coven (or whatever) of vampires are shocked, it’s actually quite cute.
I really enjoyed the pacing of the relationship between Vicky and Darien. There is no insta-love or insta-attraction. There’s not a whole lot of Mary Sue-ing going on and Darien is not “ohmygod the most handsome man in existence ever!” so the establishment of the relationship from boss-employee to something more on the spectrum of friendship and maybe even romance is quite refreshing.
There are some problems with the story. First of all there is a plot line about a string of arson-related deaths that feels pushed to the side in order to establish a relationship with Darien and Vicky. At one point it is revealed that Vicky knows some of the victims, but she never really expresses any sort of loss for those people, and we never hear about them again. I think what the author tried to do is establish a link between the vampire Darien, the house fires, the supernatural community and Vicky, but it’s very weak and could use some work.
Writing is a bit of an issue in the book. While the storytelling is fine, a lot of the writing comes off as stiff. There’s a lot of referring to characters by their first and/or last name, even when it’s the same two people in the room. The author could do with a few replacements of “Vicky did this” or “Darien did that” with “she did this” and “he did that”. It gets a bit bulky to read the same names over and over again when there are only two people in the scene.
The moments of tension need to be worked on. I didn’t even know I had come to the end of the book until it was over, which left me with an unsatisfying feeling (that and the fact that the sequel is nearly $6). And yet I still really want to read the second book. Other moments of tension throughout the story could use some work to really amp up the thrill factor. But you know… it doesn’t bother me so much because there are some moments in the book that are absolute gems to read and make up for any shortcomings.
I think what it comes down to for me is that I have so enjoyed the story and the way the characters interact with each other that I can forgive the things that I didn’t like as much. I love the slow burn relationship building with Vicky and Darien, and am very invested in seeing that continue through the rest of the series. It’s hard to do justice to that kind of relationship building, but the author does a find job here.
Also the book is clean. There’s enough sexiness in it to be appropriate and make you want more, but it is never vulgar or crass. It’s quite classy. I think you should definitely read this book. It’s pretty good even though it’s a vampire story (not as much into those and I think their time in the literary sun has somewhat passed – though we all know their popularity will circle back eventually). And I think it’s worth investing the time and money into.
A woman takes a job as an assistant to a very wealthy man. He seems eccentric yet likeable. He wonders if she will finally be an assistant that is smart and will tolerate his odd work requirements. She gets to meet his friends and through a terrifying incident discovers he and many of his friends are vampires. Ok... so far this story is just like countless other paranormal "book" plots. Except I don't call this a book. Its more of a novella. And truthfully, it reads as though its the authors first attempt at book writing (no insult intended ). At the end of this part 1 of the series, I felt no desire to read part 2.
This was a DNF for me at 40%! Even after reading some of the less flattering reviews, I gave this one a try, based on the interesting storyline blurb and some of the 4-5 star reviews. By the time I gave this up, I wished I'd listened to the 1-2 star reviews! Basically, the female lead, Vicky, is the new personal assistant for Damien. Damien is a vampire and a very powerful, rich businessman, and Vicky's job basically means that she is available 24/7 to do anything he might need. That interested me at first because of the seeming possibilities, but like everything else, the story fell WAY flat. You basically read about her doing paperwork and reminding him about meetings.....there was one time he called her to meet him in the middle of the night......and then basically only took her to dinner! Also, after a near death experience with a violent man in the office, Vicky basically has no questions and resumes work the next day (so bland, and no dimension to the MC at all). Everything was just a disappointment! Even for FREE, I regret wasting as much time as I did on this one, save yourself the time and read something else!
