Dream of Time eBook Nancy J Price

I started this book on Saturday morning, and basically just kept shooing people out of my general vicinity until I finished it this (Monday) morning.

I do love the concept of time travel, and from "A Wrinkle in Time" to "The Time Traveller's Wife," I've read them all. But this was really a standout. Engaging and well-written, with an imminently accessible and sympathetic main character, "Dream of Time" is as much a love letter to San Francisco as it is a novel. With tons of historically accurate detail, the plot is as twisty as Lombard Street, and clicks along like a well-run cable car. (Sorry, bad similes. I couldn't resist.)

The story begins with present-day Robin having increasingly realistic dreams - until eventually when she falls asleep in the "Now" she wakes up for the day in the "Then" as Jennie in 1900. As the story progresses, Robin works to decode what she believes her purpose is in being sent back in time, with the help of her beau-policeman, the toothsome Travis.
As they work to thwart two bad guys in the Then, Robin can see the changes they may have effected in the Now, with the help of the ever-useful internet as well as her own inner compass and possibly some nudges from whatever sent her there in the first place.

As much as this is a light romp through time, it's also a lovely heartfelt commentary on the nature of love, and the deft story plotting by Ms. Price keeps you holding your breath til the very end. Very satisfying.

Dream of Time eBook Nancy J Price Reviews

Think this is a most unusual book, couldn't put in down..... so different, and loved the (here and now) we could do with more writer's like this.! excellant reading..... must not miss this! spike
I couldn't put the book down! I haven't read a book nearly straight through like this in a long time. Every free moment I had, I read. I didn't want it to end.
This is an extremely well written and fascinating take on the "time travel" story, which manages to actually make the whole thing believable. The only problem is that the novel completely falls apart at the end, with an unduly contrived ending which was completely unnecessary. It seems that after writing an interesting and complex novel, the author decided to tie up the whole thing with a bow, and "dumb it down" with a trite, overly "neat" and completely unbelievable ending. What a shame! Without this ending, 5 stars! As it is, only 4.
I'd give it 4.5 stars, but that's not an option, so it gets 4. In your head, put it there

This was a very easy, very enjoyable read that sucked me in from the get go. The mystery aspect of the story was woven into the "life" side of the story in a fashion that neither was given precedent. I thought the plot wrapped up quite nicely and the denouement was fantastic, really gave the book an excellent sense of closure. The history was researched well (I suppose it could have all been made up, but I doubt it).

On the downside, I noticed some editing/transcription errors. Which I'm used to on editions of things. They did not detract from my enjoyment of the book though.
Time travel stories usually aren't my thing at all, but this book captured -- and held -- my attention. (With my limited reading time, that's saying something!) Well-researched historical details, thoughtful interplay between past and present, and a compelling protagonist made this book enjoyable to read. In addition, the plot twists kept me on my toes and the cultural references kept me chuckling. The book also got me thinking more deeply about how choices ripple through time to create history. I'm looking forward to reading more from Nancy J Price!
I loved this book. The two time periods were woven together in a very unique manner that worked perfectly. I liked the idea that Robin was sent back in time in the body of Jenny to change something that should not happen. The experience of finding out what Jenny needs to do in 1900 and that Robin is helping by researching outcome of various adventures in her future time. Travis our hero in in the past is helping Jenny figure out by clues from the future what she is meant to help change with a few mishaps along the way. This is a good book I could not put down.
It's been a while since I read this book but I'm providing this review now in the hope the author will produce more work soon. The story drew me in immediately. Being a time travel and history fan, it was essential the book create a universe I could immerse myself in, have solid historical research and compelling protagonists. Dream of Time does not disappoint on any of these fronts. I found myself invested in Jennie and Travis' "future" and loved the intricate detail of Jennie's every day life in 1900. And I adored Jennie and Travis' method of proving she really was from the future (but I won't be giving that away in this review). As a native San Franciscan, Jennie's visit to the castle version of the Cliff House which burnt down in 1907 resonated deeply with me because if I could go back in time in San Francisco, I'd go there myself!
The story builds with steady momentum as we witness Jennie and Travis getting to know each other in the midst of trying to decipher exactly how Jennie had her "accident" to begin with. This, contrasted with Jennie/Robin's modern life as an single mom, circa 2014, creates a back and forth flow between the entwined stories and also a sense of urgency because Jennie/Robin doesn't know how this ability to travel back in time has come about, why it's happened and how long she realistically has with Travis.
Of course, every good time travel story has the element of fate woven into its tale. That realization at the end, that ties together all the incidents and answers the question, "Why?". Dream of Time absolutely provides this but did so in such an unexpected, refreshing way. I certainly won't give away the final plot twist but I will say prepare yourself for an impact.
Lastly, I'd like to mention the vintage images incorporated within the actual book. These wonderful black and white images of Victorian era San Francisco brought Jennie's world to life like nothing else could.
